Santina

Out of Business

Description

Underneath the High Line, this Renzo Piano–designed glass box is warmed up by tall plants, which lends the space something of a greenhouse effect. Santina is a pretty name for a pretty place, a tribute to an Italian grandmother of chef-partner Mario Carbone (Parm, Carbone, Dirty French). His heritage comes through with branzino crudo, Calabrian tuna with thin chickpea flour pancakes, an abundant salad of arugula and figs, and spaghetti with blue crab. Seafood and vegetables are the focus, although there's also the stray, expertly prepared chicken and steak. The restaurant was built in anticipation of the downtown location of Piano's Whitney Museum of American Art, so expect an artsy, international crowd.
