Harry & Ida's Meat and Supply Co.

Out of Business

Description

Harry & Ida's may sound old-fashioned, but it's a progressive destination: both Jewish deli and purveyor of cool provisions. Many of the condiments, pickles and sweets lining the shelves are from the boroughs or farms in New York State. Foraging is a theme, and in keeping with that is a section devoted to snakebite kits, compasses, whistles and heirloom seeds. Brother-sister co-owners Will and Julie Horowitz are also behind the nearby Duck's Eatery and named this East Village follow-up for their great-grandparents, Hungarian immigrants who once ran a deli in Harlem. "Pop's" pastrami sandwich is a tribute to Harry, the tender, juicy meat bursting with flavor, stuffed in a roll with pickled cucumber, dill and anchovy mustard. It manages to be lean yet not dry, a feat. Whatever pastrami scraps are left over from sandwich making go into pastrami hot dogs. It's also sold by the pound, as is ham, bluefish salad and smoked eel.
