Elegant in décor with its brick walls and soothing, dark-wooded environment, this Upper West Side restaurant—partner to owner Masatoshi Sugio’s original joint on the Upper East Side—elevates traditional sushi fare with its distinctive, eclectic style. Try the signature baked Kumamoto oysters, as well as a satisfying list of cooked entrées, including duck breast with a balsamic teriyaki. Note: Gari’s great, but it’s hard on the pocketbook. Cheap sushi this ain’t.
