Cemitas El Tigre

Description

Cemitas El Tigre's strong following at Smorgasburg led to this Mexican luncheonette in Sunnyside, a neighborhood rife with interesting international eats. The appealing, simple space holds about 30 seats and includes a bar dispensing beer, wine and milkshakes. As you might gather from the restaurant's name, cemitas are the specialty here—sesame-seed buns filled with 10 ingredients: avocado, Oaxacan cheese, chipotle, papalo (a cousin of cilantro), pickled onions, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, black bean puree and a meat or vegetable (garlic portobello mushrooms) component of your choice. Neatly wrapped in butcher paper, the sandwiches almost—almost—hold together until the last bite. Owner Danny Lyu's menu also features burritos, tacos, guacamole and chips.
