Description

"I think that I shall never see / a poem lovely as a tree." And so begins Joyce Kilmer's renowned 1913 poem "Trees," the opening line of which remains in the brains of so many who have long since forgotten the name of the man who wrote it. He is not forgotten in the Bronx, though, which named a green oasis along the heart of the Grand Concourse in his honor (a New Yorker in his adult years, he died in World War I at the Battle of the Marne). Perhaps the most noteworthy landmark in the park is the marble-carved Heinrich Heine Fountain (also known as the Lorelei Fountain), a tribute to the German poet and his most famous poem.
