Pelham BayOutdoors & Recreation
Hunter Island Marine Zoology and Geology Sanctuary
Description
This 138-acre salt marsh and forest nature preserve, located inside Pelham Bay Park, is full of natural marvels—like the rocky coastline, the southernmost outcropping of Hartland schist, so familiar a sight along the Massachusetts shoreline; the "glacial erratic" boulders, deposited during the last ice age, visible on Two Trees Island; the unique intertidal marine ecosystem of Twin Islands; and the preserve's oak forest, which is the largest in the entire Pelham Bay Park area.
