Mott Street, Chinatown, Manhattan

Manhattan’s Chinatown now trails the City’s other main Chinatowns in raw population numbers, but still has one of the densest populations of Chinese immigrants in the Western Hemisphere. Its narrow streets bustle with activity.

Aji Ichiban Munchies Paradise, Chinatown, Manhattan

Aji Ichiban Munchies Paradise sells snacks you won’t find at 7-Eleven: say, lychee milk hard candies, dried squid and mango gummies. It also has a liberal sampling policy.

Joe’s Shanghai, Chinatown, Manhattan

There are plenty of great downtown options for soup dumplings, but Joe’s Shanghai remains the most popular. Its version draws lines out the door every night.

Pho Grand, Chinatown, Manhattan

Each Chinatown has attracted other groups of Asian immigrants and an attendant variety of restaurants. Pho Grand, which has a sprawling menu, specializes in the eponymous Vietnamese noodle soup.

Lunar New Year Parade, Chinatown, Manhattan

This yearly event is a spectacular sight, with traditional music, culinary aromas and the sight of colorful firecrackers and puppets giving even seasoned New Yorkers sensory overload.

Main Street, Flushing, Queens

About two-thirds of Flushing’s residents were born outside of the United States, many of them in China—a fact reflected in the signage along Main Street.

Fish Market, Flushing, Queens

Markets in all three NYC Chinatowns, including this one in Flushing, sell fresh fish. Often, they supply local restaurants.

Roosevelt Avenue, Flushing, Queens

Many of Flushing’s businesses are run by Asian immigrants. On this thoroughfare you’ll find restaurant supply stores, jewelers, specialty supermarkets and plenty else.

Queens Crossing Mall, Flushing

Among the attractions at the Queens Crossing Mall’s food court are ramen, dumplings and traditional Chinese fare like duck gizzards.

Pacificana, Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Sunset Park’s dim sum palaces offer the chance to sample all kinds of Chinese delicacies at bargain prices. At Pacificana dine on shrimp dumplings, chicken feet and custard tarts in a soaring second-floor space.

Ba Xuyên, Sunset Park, Brooklyn

Bahn mi has moved well past trend status to become a staple of many New Yorkers’ lunch routines. Sunset Park’s Ba Xuyên, one of a half dozen or so Vietnamese spots on Eighth Avenue, serves sandwiches that are worth seeking out.
