Description

Vintage furniture, a fireplace and a portrait of George Washington make this sophisticated boîte worthy of its presidential name, as does its location in the former library of the George Washington Hotel. The refurbished space is now part of the new Freehand Hotel and helmed by restaurateur Gabriel Stulman, who is behind Joseph Leonard and a few other West Villge stalwarts. While the bar has historical leanings, cocktails aren’t stuck in 1776. Expect inventive ingredients like curry leaf, crème fraiche and harissa on the menu of aperitifs, sours and after-dinner drinks. On the snack side, choices range from homey bar nuts and pretzels to highbrow bites like foie gras and caviar.
