Description
The World Science Festival is an annual highlight, bringing together a just-right mix of star power from various scientific disciplines and further-flung fields (Brian Greene, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Hawking, Joyce Carol Oates, Philip Glass and Charlie Kaufman have all appeared in past years). Attendees can expect a tasty smorgasbord of panel discussions, lectures, film screenings and other activities. The 2019 lineup features more than 50 events, including We Will Be Martians, a discussion about colonizing the red planet (Wednesday, May 29, 8–9:30pm), and an appearance by Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins (Friday, May 31, 7–8:30pm).
There are also a number of free family events on offer. Stargazing in Brooklyn Bridge Park affords attendees the chance to use a professional telescope to view celestial bodies; an outdoor screening of Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of Our Universe, a short film accompanied by a chorus of singers from LaGuardia High School Senior Chorus, will follow (Saturday, June 1, 7–11pm; RSVP here). City of Science will transform Washington Square Park with a daylong series of interactive demos, hands-on activities, talks and more; we're particularly excited to try our luck in the flight simulator (Sunday, June 2, 10am–5pm, RSVP here).
