Description

Jean-Michel Basquiat created the painting Defacement in response to the mistreatment of young black artist Michael Stewart, who was arrested by police for graffitiing a city subway wall in 1983 and who subsequently died while in police custody. That work is the centerpiece of this exhibition, which includes pieces from Basquiat, Stewart and other artists, all shining a light on cultural activism, police brutality, and black identity and empowerment.
