Wards Island Bridge

Description

Called a vertical-lift bridge, this awesome pedestrian and bicycle walkway runs over the Harlem River between Ward's Island and East 103rd Street in Manhattan, allowing access to the waterfront and its array of parks and walkways. Open for use between the end of March and October, but only during daylight hours, the bridge was erected in 1951 and attracts an adventurous crowd (including rollerbladers and skaters), many of whom come from the boroughs outside Manhattan just to take in the spectacular view.
