The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album cover

Description

By February 1963, Bob Dylan and his girlfriend, Suze Rotolo, had reunited after nearly nine months of separation (while Suze was studying in Italy) and were once again living together at 161 W. 4th St. When it came time to shoot the cover photo for Dylan's second album, Columbia Records staff photographer Don Hunstein took a few shots in the couple's apartment before they all went outside on a chilly late afternoon. Dylan and Rotolo walked through the slushy street toward the camera, huddled close together against the cold. The informality of this picture was a striking contrast to the carefully composed images that adorned most LP covers of the era—and an ideal visual counterpart to revelatory new Dylan songs like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall."
