Queensboro Bridge
Description
When this bridge—which connects Queens to Manhattan and runs above the East River—opened in March 1909, it was heralded with major parties and events, dubbed the "Queensboro Bridge Celebration." Although horse-drawn carriages were the first vehicles to cross the bridge on a regular basis, today the toll-free 59th Street Bridge (as it is also known) is flooded with cars and trucks, has two levels and 10 lanes, passes over Roosevelt Island and is nearly 3,800 feet long. It even inspired the Simon and Garfunkel song "Feelin' Groovy." In 2011, the bridge was officially named the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, after the former New York City mayor.
