Description

New York City’s first large-scale public AIDS memorial is located in the West Village. Dedicated in 2016, the memorial features a steel canopy set over a triangular corner of the new St. Vincent’s Hospital Park, just across Seventh Avenue from the former site of the hospital that housed the City’s first and largest AIDS ward. Under the striking white canopy there are granite pavers—designed by artist Jenny Holzer—with words from the Walt Whitman poem “Song of Myself” engraved on them, benches along the interior and a water feature at the center.
