Bronx-Whitestone Bridge

Description

This toll bridge (usually called the Whitestone by its users) was originally built from 1937 to 1939 and today runs a total of 7,140 feet between the Bronx and Queens. After the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed in 1940, the Whitestone was made over with stronger cable stays and stiffening trusses, making it safe for the thousands of cars who cross over its six lanes (each paying their dues of $5.50) every day.
