102 Pierrepont Street: Onetime home of Norman Mailer, Arthur Miller

place
102 Pierrepont St., Brooklyn, NY, 11201

Description

Norman Mailer lived at this address briefly with his parents after graduating Harvard in 1943 and shortly before and after serving in WWII. In fact, Mailer worked on the initial stages of his WWII novel The Naked and the Dead here upon his return. At the time, another writer was living in the building: Arthur Miller, who, like Mailer, occupied a number of addresses in Brooklyn Heights. According to Evan Hughes' recently published Literary Brooklyn, Mailer once said of Miller after having met him near the mailboxes, "I can remember thinking, This guy's never going anywhere. I'm sure he thought the same of me."
