Established first in 1833, the Sailors’ Snug Harbor was
founded initially as a maritime home and private hospital center for retired
sailors. Funded by Robert Randall, the institute was established with the
primary aim providing safety, shelter, food, medical care and companionship to
retired sailors during senior years of their lives. Deriving his own wealth from
the hard work and labor of these seamen, Randall had planned to dedicate it for
the benefit of the “aged, decrepit and worn out sailors”. As with time, the life
of mariners changed and they gradually, got to enjoy independent retirement
benefits, Snug Harbor became property of the city in 1973 and got gradually
renovated into an art and cultural center for the knowledge and cultural
benefits of the citizens. As it got established as a leading cultural center of
the country, various other institutions including The Staten Island Children’s
Museum, The Staten Island Botanical Garden and the John A. Noble Collection were
also established as part of this center.
